September is all about Chile.

9 Sep

As you may have guessed from the very subtle title and the incredibly interesting tweets flying about, we’re showcasing Chile this month. As everybody knows there are some bargains to be had from Chile. We’ve all picked up the cheap bottles of plonk and thought, ‘huh it’s not bad.’ Well this month there are some wonderful wines on our shelves under a tenner that show you what incredable depth of flavour you can get from this long high country on the other side of the world. From fantastically tropical sauvignons through structured creamy chardonnays to powerful cab sauvs and rich spicy syrah. Just in case you think I might be using a smidge of hyperbole (perish the thought) we’ve got a couple of wines open every weekend for you to taste and make your own mind up.

One of the things you may not know about Chile is that is is one of the few wine growing countries in the world that is free of phylloxera (the vine root destroying louse). This means that the vines grow on their original root stocks not grafted onto American root stocks like much of the rest of the world. Arguably this means that you’re getting the true expression of the grape, although there are a large number of Europeans that would happily shout me down over this!

As part of our celebration of Chile we’ve got another fantastic case of wine for you. Once again it’s £60 but this time we’ve teamed up with Wines of Chile to give you a very snazzy jute bottle bag when you buy the 6. They’re available in either of our shops whilst stocks last. Tasting notes after the jump.

Wine Tasting in Penarth Tonight, 7pm

22 Aug

bergaracbergerac blHey hey wine fans!

Got a bit of a treat for you tonight. We’ve got Gilbert from Viader Vintners coming down with some of his awesome wines to do a vertical tasting. For those of you not entirely sure what that means, basically we take a couple of wines from the same producer and vineyards and open a bottle from different years. It’s a great opportunity to see how bottle age affects a wine and how flavours develop and change over the years.

The wines that Gilbert is bringing tonight are both from the same producer in Bergerac, on the Dordogne. We’ve got 3 different vintages for each and if you want to know more about the wines come along at 7pm tonight to the Penarth Shop.

See you there,

Penarth Case of the Month

19 Aug

Wow, what a busy few months we’ve had here in Penarth. Big thanks to all that have been in to see what we’re about. Even bigger thanks to those that have started to call us your local! It’s been brilliant to hear from so many of you that have been telling the rest of Penarth that we are here and open and full to the rafters with great wine, beer and spirits.

case wines 16-8-14With that in mind we’ve just started doing a case of the month deal. Raffi and I put together 6 great wines that we think represents a cross section of our range. There is something for everyone here from old world classics to new world big hitters. We’ve also included the tasting notes to give you an idea of the fantastic flavours going on in each bottle.

We’ve managed a great price point for these at just £60 for the case of 6 with free delivery to Penarth (saving £4.44) or, if you have the discipline to not guzzle them, our 15% case discount also applies to 12 making it an amazing £109.49 (a massive £19.39 saving). When you decide to take advantage of this awesome offer just give Simon, Raffi or Dan a call in the Penarth shop on 029 2115 7349, email us [email protected] or, if you’re feeling traditional, just come into the shop.

Cidre tasting in Penarth

15 Jul

As you may have guessed from the very subtle title above we are having a cidre tasting in Penarth tomorrow. The guys from Breton Corner are going to be in Foxy’s Deli during the day with loads of delicious produce from just over the channel. Then at 5 they are going to wander over the road to us and crack open some of their awesome cidre. If you’ve not tried Breton Cidre before, it’s really worth a visit. The flavour is a different style what we make over here. Breton cidre has a grassyness that just reminds you of lush rolling fields with cows chewing the cud on a beautiful day in August. You’re sat on a stile with a handful of crusty baguette oozing with mature camembert in one hand a stoneware jug of cidre in the other, staring wistfully out towards the horizon.

Sorry got a bit carried away there, so tomorrow 5pm onwards, free booze.
