The Wonderful World of Penarth

1 Jul

So it has been just over a month we’ve been open in Penarth now and it’s going great! Everyone has been so supportive. Some saying how they like the layout, some complimenting us on our selection, some just to see Watson. We hope that everyone is pleased with what we’ve been doing so far here with the range and layout.2013-YR-SRUIN-22oz

Some of the things that we’re able to do here with the increased space really make life easier. We’ve got a much bigger beer fridge so we can arrange it by style, so if you fancy a lager or a Weiss beer it’s really easy to see not only your favourites, but others from different parts of the world that you might not necessarily have thought about or noticed. Sticking with the beer we’ve also got a ‘Last Chance Saloon’ where beers that you are unlikely to see again go. If a beer goes to the last chance saloon it’s because we probably can’t get it again for a while, either the last few of a limited run or super-rare stuff with no official distribution. Just to cap it all off we’ve got our grab boxes too. Find it hard to decide from the selection of over 100 brews? Then let us do the choosing for you! 6 bottles of awesome beer with a (vague and tenuous) theme, tasting notes (for untappd), with a bit of a discount in a handy beer carrier. It’ll be changing regularly so you won’t get bored!

The Woolf’s Pink Gin

18 May

One of our most loyal customers just came in after a bottle of gin and was willing to share his perfected recipe for Pink Gin. Here goes…

The Woolf’s Pink Gin

This recipe is for one person, but feel free to scale it up.

In a cocktail shaker put:

  • 3 ice cubes,
  • 3 dribbles of Angustora Bitters,
  • 3 good measures of decent Gin (Dr Woolf recommends Hayman’s Old Tom)
  1. Shake like hell until you’ve smashed up all the ice.
  2. Strain all the liquid into a glass (a bucket if you’re thirsty).
  3. Take the top off your shaker and add the ice into the glass.
  4. I know this bit isn’t in the original navy pink gin version but, top it up with a good tonic (Fevertree) and it goes a lovely salmon colour.

There you go, Dr Woolf’s pink gin. He assures me that it has taken 20 years to get this drink perfect.  If nothing comes back into focus you can always get him to sort out your eyes at medi-optics.co.uk.

Let us know what you think on the twitters!

Untapped Border now in bottles.

12 Mar

WP_20140312_12_17_07_ProThe wonderful guys at Untapped have just dropped off a few cases of their beer including the Border Bitter. Previously only available in cask they have decided to give in to popular demand and bottle it. It’s a bottled conditioned, undeniably balanced, golden brown beer with light roasted malt flavours and classic British and American hop overtones. Easy on the palate, tasty and wholly satisfying. Serve with fine Welsh cheese or a game of rugby. At 3.8% it’s a perfect session ale.

We also got a few cases of their other beers to top up stock so we’ve got loads for you to have a beer festival at home this weekend!

Weetwood Ales’ Eastgate has landed!

11 Mar

Weetwood's Eastgate Ale bottleshotHaving just got back from an excellent weekend mountain biking in North Wales I brought back some of the beer brewed by one of my best mates Pete. Weetwood Ales’ Eastgate Ale was brewed for the centenary of the Eastgate clock in Chester (my home town). It’s a golden beer with a fruity foretaste that is followed by an acceptable finishing of hops. It won best ale at the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival in 2002 (before a bunch of the great restaurants left), champion beer of Cheshire at the Macclesfield Beer Festival in 2003 and the cask ale of choice at my wedding.

Why the Eastgate clock you ask? Well it’s the second most photographed clock in the UK, after Big Ben and was designed and installed to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria (thanks wikipedia!) .

So pop in and grab a couple of bottles, just £2.79 for a 500ml bottle bottled bright so you don’t need to worry about sediment.
