Dear Friends

Thanks for everybody who had time and popped up in the shop (Roath) despite the rain last Sunday.
During the day, a total crowd of 47 people tried the wines we had on tasting.  We received a Spanish cortege with 13 people from Madrid, Barcelona, Navarra, Andalucia, Galicia and Toledo, so no people left in Spain.  Busy Sunday after the rain. We had 6 wines in total, but 4 of them were samples from the Distributors and we don’t currently sell them yet (so, we haven’t named them here), but because of the feedback we had we will certainly bring some of them on board. So here there is a small description of the wines:

From the Distributors:
1) Spanish organic white wine made from a Sauvignon Blanc/Verdejo blend. Light, fresh and delicate with floral undertones and delicious with any seafood. £7.99.

2) Grecanico – *** STAR *** WHITE WINE ***This delicious Sicilian wine made from a regional grape was the Star during the afternoon. Very pleasant, easy drinking and versatile with food. Subtle aromas of tropical fruits on the nose and a gentle lemony character on the palate. Its body is light as well and it would be ideal to go with light dishes and white meats. £8.99.

3) New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough – Loads of gooseberry and grapefruit on the nose and palate with a hint of guava. It was the last white wine on the tasting because its body is clearly full. £13.99.

4) Spanish organic Tempranillo. This unoaked Spanish is light and fruity. Lots of cherries on the nose and palate make it ideal to go with the traditional paella but it will match more meaty dishes. If the day is too hot and you’re going to a barbecue this is your easy pick. £7.99.

From our stock:

5) Mas Montel – Petite Syrah *** STAR *** RED WINE *** With soft ripe flavours, showing more complex aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg alongside with earthy tones it has a medium to full-body with spice, liquorice, leather and dark red fruits. Delicious! £8.99.

6) Umbrele Merlot – ***Highly Commended***. Our Romanian Merlot from Transylvania is always a good tipple.  It is soft with supple red berries and a dash of spice on the palate. Jammy flavours pronounced with a medium body, this is a superb example of Merlot.  The American oak imparts vanilla and sweeter characteristics to the wine. This wine is fantastic with food. £7.49.

Sunday Sessions Roath 12/07/2015

18 Jul

Dear Friends

A very big thank you for those who popped in last Sunday for the tasting.
Here are some notes about the wines we tried:

Ibis £8.99 – a pink frizzante prosecco, delicate and food versatile. Medium dry with strawberry & raspberry notes. Very easy drinking and delicious in a sunny day.

Brookford Chardonnay/Semillon £7.49 – This unusual blend comes from Australia, delivering delicious fresh peach and melon notes on the palate. Medium body and ideal to go with grilled sea bass.

A-mano Bianco £9.99 – Made from 60% Fiano, 30% Falanghina and 10% Verdeca grapes, It is fresh and a delightful aperitif. A perfect match for seafood, chicken and salads, we adore it in spring with asparagus and in the summer with a fresh pasta like spinach ravioli.

Vina Barredero £11.99 –*** Star Wine of the day*** Made from the Zalema grape and coming from the far south west of spain in the region of Huelva. This wine has a bright straw coloured appearance, aromas of white peach and pineapple with hints of wild herbs.A refreshing drink with bags of citrus flavours. Serve between 8-10ºC.

Montes Pinot Noir £9.99 -A truly Chilean hero. Very fruity with aromas of raspberries, strawberries, and cherries along with a floral touch a bit of well-integrated oak that lends complexity. The light-bodied palate is delicate and fresh with soft and silky tannins and excellent acidity. The red fruit reappears along with a touch of anise and the finish is perfumed and fresh with good balance.

Latium Valpolicella £11.99 – *** Highly commended*** Made from a blend of Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, Croatina, this Valpolicella it is of pleasant olfactory impact, notes of red berry fruit on the palate, soft and easy to drink. A good integration among the various flavours, dominating red fruits and a hint of dark-cherries.

Cheers!

Sunday Sessions – Roath 28/06/15 – Tasting Notes

28 Jun

Hillbillies

Big thanks to all that came and made the 1st of hopefully many Sunday Sessions an enjoyable day and hopefully engaging and worthwhile experience for you guys the customers : )
And if you didn’t come – well you missed out! Though we will be tasting every Sunday alternating Roath / Penarth – so Next week Penarth 🙂
Each week I will post a list of wines we tried and some quick notes so the more researchy of you can take a grander and kinda get the idea.

Quinta do Patrimonio – Gwin Vinho Verdes (Portugal) £8.99
From the last few bottles of previous vintage (current bottling imminent) so the usual “spritz”, and acidity associated with VV is not too pronounced, whilst this makes the wine thicker through the palate the wine still has a fresh summery taste, that because of the lower acidity holds in the mouth that bit longer. Will be interesting to see how the new vintage compares.

Borgo Selene – Bianco (Sicily) £7.99
50/50 Catarratto, Inzolia blend delicate but zesty citrus fruits on both the nose and the palate, crisp and dry on the finish but with a good minerality that belays its price tag – excellent value.
Vida Organica – Torrontes (Argentina) £10.49
More delicate than our “other” torrontes in the shop, nice soft stone fruits on the palate, clean and fresh if more subtle than alternatives- nice weight in the palate and all round pleasing mouth feel. Perfumed and versatile.
Ciu Ciu – Bacchus (Marche, Italy) £9.99 *** STAR WINE ***
Sangiovese and Montepulciano from Piceno. Organic and vegan certified this wine screams of terroir with rich earthy notes under full juicy raisiny fruits – all with a medium to light body. The clarity and freshness of this wine blows me away (one of my fav current wines)
Les Volcans – Syrah (France) £12.99 *** Highly Commended ***
From the volcanic Auvergne region (just south of Loire) this wine comes from the slopes of Puy-de-Dome the highest peak in the region. The altitude really shows, giving minerality and a pepperyness on the palate and super-duper length on the finish all whilst remaining fresh and elegant. A real class act.
Familia Schroder – Deseado Sparkling Torrontes (Patagonia) £13.99
Charmat method fizz that is off dry and has a full fruitiness and creaminess that fills the palate, good minerality makes this a great post tasting cleanser or a good match for goats cheese, perhaps a great alternative to all the “dry” fizz out there.
